Answers to your questions about registration and link submission

Since the new BBAW awards structure was announced, we’ve had many questions and have seen many comments about the process. I want to take this time to clarify two particular points: registration for awards, and the new request for a post on your blog announcing your registration.

First, the self-registration process: I’ve seen many people say that they feel uncomfortable nominating themselves for a BBAW award. Let me say, I completely understand. In retrospect, I think I’d change the wording of the registration form, and I will make note of it for next year’s awards. I suggest that we all think about it as self-registration. The form is simply to register your blog into a particular category. All registered blogs are eligible for awards if you meet the basic requirements (you blog regularly about books,do not charge a fee to feature a book or author), unless you tell us that you do not wish to be considered for a BBAW award. That’s it. By registering, you are not saying that you think you have the best blog, or anything like that. It’s simply registration into a particular category.

Why do we require registration? Last year, we allowed anyone to nominate a blog for an award. This resulted in some bloggers who did not want to participate being put in the unfortunate position of disappointing their fans who nominated them when they withdrew from the awards. Also, some bloggers were nominated in categories that they themselves did not think were accurate. Finally, there was some criticism that judges were evaluating blogs in a niche with which they did not have enough expertise or knowledge. Our process this year is designed to avoid those issues. It also levels the playing field and takes away some of the popularity aspects of being nominated.

Registering for BBAW will allow for the following:
1. Inclusion in a Book Blogger Directory that will allow categorization of blogs, so that it will be easy to find blogs in a particular niche.
2. Voting by peer group. The initial list of registered blogs in a niche will be voted on by other bloggers within that same niche, to determine the longlist.
3. Easy identification of book bloggers who are willing to act as judges for the shortlist phase.
4. Easier and more consistent judging across all phases of the process.

That point number 4 is a result of the new request to “Please submit a link to your ONE blog post that contains the links on which you would like your blog to be judged.” We’ve gotten some questions on the reasons for this, and I’d like to explain.

The submission of links to 5 posts was something that was instituted last year, though later in the process. This allows all of the judges to evaluate the blogs based on the same posts.. Last year, the awards committee emailed each nominated blogger individually, and the timeframe for link submissions was very short. In addition, the awards committee had to manually copy and paste each link individually into the scoresheets. With over 1,000 blogs nominated, this was way too much work for a committee of volunteers to undertake. By requiring bloggers to publicly post the links, the judging process will also be more transparent; everyone will be able to see what posts were included in the judging.

In addition, the inclusion of these posts on registered blogs means that more people will read and learn about BBAW. When combined, the registered bloggers who post about BBAW have a far greater reach into the book blogging community, and in this way we hope to spread the word about Book Blogger Appreciation Week, so that anyone who wants to participate can.

I hope this posts answers some of your questions. Please feel free to comment here, or to reach out to the BBAW Awards Committee by email (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) or twitter (@BBAW).

BBAW Awards 2010

The Executive Board of Book Blogger Appreciation Week 2010 is pleased to announce the 2010 Book Blogger Appreciation Week (BBAW) Awards. The BBAW Awards recognize the outstanding contribution that book bloggers all over the world make to bring attention to all genres of books.

The process of the 2010 Book Blogger Appreciation Awards is as follows:

Phase One—Registration: June 7—July 7
Book bloggers wishing to be considered for an award must announce their intent to register by publishing a post on their blog highlighting and linking to five past posts they feel distinguish their blog in their chosen niche. (See the descriptions of the awards for information about the nature of the five past posts.) Once the post declaring their intention (including the five links to past posts) has gone live, bloggers must fill out the BBAW Awards Registration form and include the permalink to the post announcing their intent to register. Bloggers who wish to be eligible to vote but who are not interested in being considered for an award must register in a niche, but they do not need to announce their intent to register and do not need to publish a post with links to five past posts. Bloggers will also be able to nominate their top pick for a book in their niche that was published between August 2009 and June 2010.  (View the niche categories and the featured categories)

Phase Two—Creating the Long List July 13—July 25
Every blogger who has registered within a chosen niche or category will receive a ballot. The ballot will include all the bloggers who have registered within that same niche. Bloggers will then be asked to pick and rank the top five blogs within their chosen niche (they may, of course, choose their own blog). The combined data from all bloggers within each niche will determine the long list for that niche.  In addition, the categories of best meme, feature, and event will be introduced at this time.

Phase Three—Panels Determine Short Lists August 1—August20
A panel of judges for each award will evaluate the blogs within that category to create a short list of blogs for final voting. Panels will be made up of bloggers registered for Book Blogger Appreciation Week who have volunteered for the job. No blogger will judge a category in which he or she is registered. Bloggers who registered but chose not to be considered for an award may volunteer to be a judge.

Phase Four—All bloggers registered for Book Blogger Appreciation Week Vote on the Shortlist August 28—September 6
Every blogger registered for Book Blogger Appreciation Week will receive an individual code that will be used for voting. Each registered blogger will receive one code and will be able to vote in every category.

Phase Five—Winners Announced!
The winners will be announced throughout Book Blogger Appreciation Week on September 13-17.

Eligibility
Bloggers who charge a fee for coverage of a book or author will not be eligible for BBAW Awards. Bloggers must have posted within the time frame of August 2009 to June 2010 to be eligible. Links submitted for consideration must be from posts originally published from August 2009 to June 2010. The members of the BBAW Executive Board are not eligible to win an award.

Criteria
The panels evaluating blogs will judge only the five posts highlighted and linked in the intent to register post. They will use the following minimum criteria:
1. Posts submitted for consideration reflect the award category.
2. The blogger posts consistently and on a regular (not necessarily daily) basis.
3. Posts submitted for consideration are well written and have been proofread for spelling and general grammatical errors.
4. The overall design of the blog should not distract from the content.
[NOTE: Judges will be given other specific criteria for each category, but these are the basic criteria and the most important considerations for bloggers submitting posts for consideration for BBAW Awards.]

The BBAW Recognition of Excellent Service for Others

image

I want to sincerely thank everyone who voted my blog as most Altruistic Blog.  I considered declining this award, but someone on the Awards Committee reminded me that the community has spoken.

What I really want to do is point out to you the amazing work my fellow nominees do and introduce a new kind of recognition to BBAW.

Color Online is a blog run by “Susan” who personally inspires me tremendously.  From the About page:

We are a community organization dedicated to empowering young women. We operate a library and offer support to young girls at local non-profit in Detroit. Our blog focuses on women writers of color. Founded in September 2005, my vision was to engage reluctant and non-readers. We were a lit studies group. To call us a book club is not only limiting but it fails to describe what I envisioned for us: a collective that explored the arts and made a connection between all art forms and our lives, a community where we encouraged one another and discovered our voices, a space where girls felt empowered by experiencing a cultural, political and a spiritual awakening.

Guys Lit Wire ran a book fair for boys who are incarcerated in the LA County Juvenile System.  They had no books so Guys Lit Wire worked to get them some.  This is something I believe in one hundred percent.

Dawn of She Is Too Fond of Books walked 60 miles over 3 days to raise funds for breast cancer awarness and treatment.  Dawn really took this project seriously, devoting a great deal of her blog time to it and writing with gut wrenching honesty about the experience.

Natasha of Maw Books Blog ran a Darfur Awareness Campaign where she blogged on Darfur for a month.  She continues to review books about important social justice issues on her site.

And then there was me.  To be honest, I had no idea why I was nominated for this.  Sometimes I blog about Compassion International, I used to write for a social justice blog and I still occasionally share links about things I find, but I don’t consider that enough to land me in this company.  So when I realized I had won this, I knew I wanted to shake things up.

I am now introducing the BBAW Recognition of Excellent Service for Others.  I am passing this onto each of the shortlisted blogs in this category because they do all serve others.  And I want to encourage you to check out their work and join in with it.

I don’t think altruistic blogs need an award for what they do…just as book bloggers don’t need an award.  What they need is exposure so that others can learn about the need and join in the cause.  So it is my sincere hope that you will check out these blogs, learn about what they are doing and join in their powerful fights against illiteracy, disease, and social injustice.

And a very special thank you to Carolyn who made this badge at the last minute for me!)
