My husband, bless his heart, is not a romantic guy but has done two things in 30 years that make up for it.  One year on my birthday (27th), I woke up, got the kids ready for school, went into get in the van to drive them to school and there sat a brand spankin’ new, dream of mine, Jeep Cherokee with a bow on top!

The year we celebrated 25 years together, I took the kids to Florida for spring break, he stayed home and when I walked in the door, the slider shade was down with a card stuck to it.  I opened the card that said surprise and opened the shade and there sat another dream of mine a hot tub!!

One of the most romantic things my husband ever did was surprise me with a trip to London! He knew I had always wanted to go, but life kept getting in the way.
Normally, the man cannot keep a secret to save his life, but he managed to make all of the plans without me knowing a thing.

Imagine my surprise when I opened my Christmas present to find an umbrella, shortbread cookies, a London map, and buried at the bottom of the box, plane tickets!

The best present ever!

Unfortunately, I don’t have anything that documents the event, but one of the most sweetest/romantic things ever done for me was when a friend carved out my name on a frozen pond in the middle of our college campus. I was immortalized until the next snowfall! It was very endearing.  grin

My husband, fiance at the time, had an entire bar room of people sing the chorus to Brown-Eyed Girl to me right before he dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him.  I wish I had it recorded, but I will never forget it.

My husband is not truly a romantic.  He is the best husband and father that one could ask for!  He did make asking me to marry him more romantic than I would have ever expected!  One night he came over to see me and had this adorable white bear with a lovely red ribbon around its’ neck.  He gave me the bear and I loved it.
I proceeded to kiss and thank him for it.  I knew he was acting a little strangely and proceeded to observe the bear more closely.  What did I find?!  On the very back of the red ribbon, hung a beautiful engagement ring.
And I thought I like the bear before!!!!!  Needless to say, I began to cry and cry…..then I said “YES!”
Many thanks…..Cindi

I met my DH on a Friday night at a Monte Carlo fund raiser.  He asked me to help him carry some boxes to the trash.. they turned out to be empty.  We went to Denny’s at 1:30 in the morning where we stared into each other’s eyes.  He had a hat on and I didn’t know until we met again on Sunday that he was bald! Tuesay eve we met for cocktails at a local spot and sat by the pool… he quoted the love chapter of scripture and asked me to marry him!  We were married 4 months later and that was 24 years ago! =)
Maybe I’ll post about that at my blog for our anniversary!

My husband is very romantic.  The most recent romantic thing he did for me was for my 40th birthday.  He took some old home movie reels of my twin sister and me as babies and toddlers that had suffered some smoke damage from a fire we had in our house when I was a little girl and had them restored.  He had the restorer place them on a DVD and add music so that I might have these priceless memories to enjoy forever.

Some older historical fiction novels that I loved were written by Victoria Holt. She also wrote under the name Phillipa Carr. The books are very romantic and well written.

I think you’ve got the basic outline right. One thing I’d add, usually in a romance the hero (it’s more usual that it’s the hero, but you can have it be the heroine) is somewhat tormented. There’s something in his/her past that has wounded him emotionally (like his wife cheating on him; his girlfriend dumping him for his best friend). To be together, the heroine has to break through the barriers the hero has put up to keep himself from being hurt again.
